Ergin Aktaş, the oiler who murdered Captain Bora Ekşi, was suffering from financial and psychological problems. Ergin Aktas created problems on board and each time he apologized, the captain was kind to forgive him.

Turkish media reported that on November 10, the captain noticing the aggressive behavior of Ergin, wanted to sign him off in Singapore. Ergin once again apologized for his behavior and the captain decided to keep him on board. It is also stated that the captain allowed Ergin to stay on board because he had a soft corner for this man.

After refueling in Singapore, when the captain once again noticed behaviural changes in Ergin's, he called Ergin's family and consulted with them.

According to the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, "The shipping company officials have confirmed that the captain took the assistance of Telehealth services to help Ergin. Ergin's family informed the captain of his regular medications. To help Ergin feel good the captain made him speak to his family. The captain has always been good to him and has given him support".

Ergin Aktaş, who killed the captain with a knife on the Turkish ship while the ship was in the Indian Ocean, then turned to the chief engineer, saying, sır Now it's your turn. In the meantime, the killer wounded 4 crew members. The crew overpowered Ergin and brought him under control, thus averting a major crisis on board the ship.

Seeing the deadly event unfold before their eyes the 3rd officer, the 2nd officer made an emergency announcement through the PA system and requested other crew members to help in controlling the killer who was aggressively and aimlessly moving with the knife in his hands. The timely announcement prevented further death on the ship.
It is also claimed that Ergin rushed to the chief engineer's cabin with the knife in the hands and said, “It's your turn,”.
